Gender and Sexuality: Applications in Society

The University of British Columbia via edX

Overview

Navigating through the complexities of Gender & Sexuality is a necessity in our world, now more than ever. Engage with globally renowned scholars from top Canadian universities to learn concepts and practices that advance respect and human rights. This course will teach you to better understand and apply knowledge about gender and sexuality -- a critical first step in addressing social, economic and cultural inequalities.

This intersectional approach to Gender & Sexuality Studies will cover key topics in the fields of literature, language, geography, history, political science, sociology, anthropology, cinema and media studies, law and medicine. Some questions we will address include:

  • What is gender and sexuality?
  • What does this mean in different contexts?
  • How do we think critically and creatively about identity, communication, and community?
  • How are gender and sexuality organized in media and popular culture?
  • How do people, young and old, negotiate knowledge about gender and sexuality?

This course is for anyone who wants to build their own cultural competence and the capacity of those around them to understand gender and sexuality and the intersections of these core facets of culture and nature, with other differences, like race, age or disability.

My name is FARAJA AMRI Gentil, from Goma/DR Congo, Central Africa. It was a great pleasure to have embarked in this course where I have learned a lot about Gender, Sexuality and more importantly the Intersectionality and how this latter brings gender...

Some of the course content was offensive and excluded those who may be trying to understand but aren't as left leaning as others and this is coming from a fairly liberal person. There was a couple comments made that insinuated that all heterosexual relationships...

The array of topics covered was super interesting and I definitely learned a ton. What was challenging for me was the fact that it was very video/interview-heavy, and as a visual learner, it was difficult to follow along with the discussions many times....
  • The course was amazing and the classes were simple and right to the point. Some of them were videos of activist and other personalities speech. This class was inspiring and motivational

This is one of the best courses that I have ever taken. The course lasts 6 weeks, looking at gender and sexuality from an intersectional lens, and exploring it through different dimensions such as historical narratives, representation in pop culture,...

Nice introduction to the subject, although the course presumes all students are liberal and enlightened, which is not true. Could use some more basic explanations and definitions at the beginning of the course (For example is a trans woman partnered...

This course has been very interesting. It is a good introduction to the topics of sex, gender and sexuality and how they are applied in society. The only thing I missed was more references of academic origin. While I understand that the course aims are...

Great course- gave me some really helpful insights into how best to apply pressure for social justice in a complex world stacked against the whole range of minority groups- especially those at their intersections. Nicely engaging and entertaining whilst...

The course is very-well structured. I thought I already knew a lot about the topic, but no! The course covered things that I may have actually overlooked. I also like Janice's no-nonsense approach, as well as the clarity in how she delivers her lectures. The guest speakers are also experts in the topics that they were assigned to discuss. At first I never thought I'd finish the course because of demanding schedule, but it was so interesting and an excellent learning experience. I wish to teach again at a university, and I know that the things that I have learned in this course are very valuable as I share them to the academe – admin, faculty and students. Thank you so much, Janice and company. Keep it up! :)

It was a great course, with lots of resources and interesting things to learn! It gave a nice wide-opened reflection on how gender, sex and sexuality influences people's lives and practices and of course, societies and governments at a more extended level....

Informative, interesting, and useful. Starts with an overview and defines lots of terms that are new to some of us, then proceeds through units on history, pop culture, health, law and enacting social change. Makes you stop and think, and gives you the tools and perspectives to see many parts of society in a new light regarding sex and gender minority issues. Two written assignments push you to think in practical terms about how real change can be enacted. Highly recommended. Thank you, Janice and the edx team!

The course was fantastic, well structured and easily accessible. Unfortunately I thought I was able to submit the final assignment before February 20 but alas it was February 14 at 9am, I missed my moment by a few hours.
My progress shows that I have a 68% which will still allow my a certificate but feels a little unsatisfactory to have such a modest grade.
Alas, it will not stop me from taking another class, I will be more conscious of the timeline and I hope edX can maybe make the timeline a bit more clear as to avoid this same situation for others.
Regardless, I really appreciate the opportunity to participate.
Thank you and looking forward to my certificate.

This course really helped me to understand the significance of intersectionality and the various layers of issues underlying gender and sexuality. This helped me gain insight into the challenges of the existing systems and how it proves debilitative for individuals who cannot conform to the myopic views regarding gender and sexuality.
