Working with Translation: Theory and Practice

This course carries with it a wealth of information about the topic of translation and interpretation and how we interact with and use them in our lives. It addresses difficulties, provides case studies, poses critical thinking questions, and offers a strong cross-section of videos that support what is being said in each section for each week of the course.

It can be finished in under four weeks, but takes several hours of work per week to fully get through. It's worth noting that this isn't a course on how to translate or interpret, but rather it is a course on what it is, how and where it's used, and the impacts it has on the individual through global level.

For those that are studying translation and/or interpretation, or those who are curious about it, this is an excellent primer that will absolutely open the doors to curiosity.

This course is quite interesting and offers many case studies that relate to the topics discussed, to allow you to more fully engage with the content, but the actual content about translation, such as 'who translates?', 'where does translation take place?', etc. is quite obvious and I did not learn that much that was actually 'new' information, but more so slightly expanded on the information that I had before, except maybe the fact that translation and interpreting are a lot harder than I initially thought, even though I (as I said) already knew that it was difficult.
I would recommend this course if you have an extreme interest in translation and if you know nothing about it, as, except a few new sources of translated texts, songs and ways of communicating with translators, there isn't much information that I couldn't look up online or watch in a short video, instead of being committed to a course.
On the other hand, you could skim through the 4 weeks of mostly text and videos, as I did, and gain a little knowledge on translation as an actual job, in which there was some insight and I was able to more fully understand the type of ways and things that translators work in and do, which was the main thing that I gained from the course - being able to understand how translators translate, etc.
Either way, it was pretty decent.

I have really enjoyed taking this course! I have found it truly insightful and interesting, the information provided in the videos and articles is extremely relevant and I feel I have learnt so much related to the theory and practice of translation and also interpreting. The course has provided me with excellent bibliographies which will help me to consolidate theory and also the many links to important websites has been really important and valuable to me. I have also really enjoyed interacting with other learners on the course, as I haven't felt like I am studying alone and I have found other peoples' insights and ideas really useful. I also feel that the team of professors from both universities have really supported me and have replied to my comments and ideas, and this has been wonderful too.

I found the course very enlightening, interesting and useful. It is not intended to turn you into a specialist in the field of translation, but it sure broadens one's horizons and provides a lot of insight into the different aspects of translation, both as a profession and part of life for many people. To me, as a translator who is new to the profession, it was particularly helpful to gain a more detailed idea of codes of conduct, principles, practices and what things are like in different corners of the world.
Moreover, through the small assignments and reference materials, the course prompted me to seek information and find many useful resources.
Nowadays we have constant access to all sorts of information, but what's awesome about this course is that it gives you a synthesized, summarized and structured volume of information presented in an engaging and easy-to-process manner.

I absolutely loved this course. I found it very useful and it gave me so much new information about the process of translating and interpreting I was not aware of. I found the division of the course very appropriate and clear and the explanations very useful and full of information.

even though it was more a theoretical course (meaning we were not given many translation exercises) I personally think this gave me a solid base to start translating\interpreting in the future.

I found all the course leaders very prepared and very good at explaining and sometime simplifying for us quite controverse and difficult knowledge. I also fond found all the examples and testimonies very useful.

I would 100% recommend this course to whoever is interested in becoming a translator\interpreter.

The aim of the course is to provide learners with an overview of how translation as a profession is carried out. It therefore focuses on several aspects of translating and interpreting from both a theoretical and practical point of view. as such it provides a good idea of what it means to work as a translator or as an interpreter.
The course was extremely useful, offering numerous insights into the profession and involving learners with or without knowledge in translation. many fellow learners had translation experience so it was a good opportunity to compare experiences and also share frustrations over the difficuties that arise when working with clients.
Activities were engaging and fun.
Mentors and course leaders offered great feedback and support, which came as a stimulus for learners to participate and interact.
I would definitely recommend this course and look forward for more on translation from Cardiff University.
